in an attempt to は、「〜しようとして、〜しようと企てて」
という意味を持つイディオムである。
attempt 自体が名詞と動詞として使われ、名詞の場合は「試み、
企て、攻撃」などの意味があり、動詞の場合は自動詞として

〜を試してみる」などの意味で使われている。
